Description: Utah Symphony Presents Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1 DATES and TIMES: October 24-25, 2025 | 7:30 PM VENUE: Maurice Abravanel Hall 123 W. South Temple Salt Lake City, UT. 84101 SYNOPSIS: David Robertson, conductor Timothy McAllister, saxophone Utah Symphony BOULEZ: Memoriale STEVEN MACKEY: Anemology (Saxophone Concerto), Utah Symphony co-commission RACHMANINOFF: Symphony No. 1 Our orchestra gives its very first performance of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1, unveiling a masterpiece brimming with youthful intensity and the raw vulnerability of a composer establishing his voice. The program opens with Boulez’s Mémoriale, a piece that broke new ground with its intricate textures and vivid soundscapes—a fitting prelude to an evening dedicated to the thrill of first encounters in music. Be among the first to experience Steven Mackey’s Saxophone Concerto, a daring work fresh from its world premiere in California, performed by the remarkable Timothy McAllister—one of the instrument’s most celebrated virtuosos. A trailblazing composer known for his inventive style, Mackey embraces a bold and genre-defying approach, making this a highly anticipated new concerto.
